Our Journey

For two decades, we have guided guests toward renewal, with the same care today as on our very first day. We greet each guest with the care they deserve, tailoring our holistic wellness retreats to meet their unique needs. I remain deeply humbled by how our sanctuary came to be, and I invite you to learn about the path that led me to create this space for emotional healing and sustainable living.

My Academic Path and Early Life

My parents migrated from India to Kenya in the early 20th century, and I was born and raised in Nairobi. I later completed my PhD in Control Systems at the University of Cambridge. My early research into systemic efficiency caught global attention, and in 1984, I was invited to join the United Nations in New York. There, I led a team of experts designing logistical systems to deliver critical food and emergency aid to crisis zones in Sub-Saharan Africa facing severe famine. This humanitarian work marked the beginning of a long career at the UN dedicated to sustainable development. Over the years, I had the privilege of contributing to historic milestones like Agenda 21 at the Earth Summit, a foundational blueprint that redefined global cooperation and planetary protection.

From Global Policy to Personal Growth

Looking back, I came to see that our global approach to sustainability was incomplete. We were trying to fix the world from the top down, when we needed to start from the ground up. True sustainability cannot be forced through policy; it must be awakened within. We can only inspire people to protect the Earth if we first help them become conscious of themselves, heal their own lives, and live authentically.

The Three Pillars of Zen

To fulfil this mission, Zen Resort integrates three distinct elements into a cohesive daily rhythm:

Balinese Culture and Community

Bali is one of the few places where a living culture embodies harmony with oneself, nature, and community. From daily rituals to deep bonds, the Balinese live with an interconnectedness that ensures no individual is left unsupported. We are committed to sustainable, eco-friendly operations to honour and protect the very culture and nature that heals our guests.

The Ayurvedic System

Rooted in my Indian heritage, Ayurveda is a complete system of preventative, restorative and curative health. It recognises that true wellness requires harmony between the mind, body, spirit, and environment. At Zen, we integrate this ancient science with personalised therapeutic treatments, mindful nutrition, and the core practices of Yoga, Pranayama, and Meditation. We emphasise breathwork as a core tool for awareness, bringing guests back to the foundations of human vitality.

The Healing Power of Nature

Zen Resort is surrounded by forests, rice fields, and natural gardens designed to live alongside nature rather than dominate it. Inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-Yoku, or forest bathing, we have left the ancient forest bordering our grounds untouched. This allows your nervous system to rest and recover through pure sensory immersion, enabling you to breathe, listen, and restore your vitality.

An Invitation

In a fast-paced world, Zen Resort offers a necessary sanctuary of clean air, organically grown nutrition, and a genuine sense of community. It is a space to find your way back to stillness, breathe, and reflect on the path behind you and the journey ahead. Whether you are navigating life transitions, recovering from burnout, or simply seeking contemplation, Zen provides the gentle support you need.Beyond relaxation, this is a place to rediscover joy, reconnect with the capacity to give and receive love, and remember the simple blessing of being alive. If you have already booked your stay, I look forward to welcoming you to our family.
